// THE SHORT ANSWER
A maturity extension moves a facility's final repayment date out — a few months on the same terms to let a refinancing complete, or, in its larger form, an amend-and-extend that pushes the maturity years out in exchange for changed terms, a fee or a higher margin. For a bank it is a way to see an exit happen rather than force it; for a borrower it is time bought with evidence. Asked for without a credible plan for the new date, it is the same refinancing problem with a later deadline.

The market is mid-market commercial lending as practised in New Zealand and Australia; where a convention differs elsewhere, the page says so.
