// THE SHORT ANSWER
Workout is a bank's management of a loan in serious difficulty, usually by a specialist team separate from the one that made it: the banker who built the relationship is rarely the right person to enforce against it. The team's objective is recovering the bank's money rather than growing the account, which for a viable business usually means a restructuring — new terms, a plan, sometimes a standstill — and for one that is not viable an orderly exit. A borrower moved to workout is dealing with new people, who will read the file from the beginning.

The market is mid-market commercial lending as practised in New Zealand and Australia; where a convention differs elsewhere, the page says so.
