Asked to define a ratio they have never met, a candidate gives a fluent, confident definition. It is wrong.
Bank graduate programmes: where to apply, and when
The careers page of each large bank in seven countries, its graduate programme, any commercial or business banking stream it names, and the application dates it prints. Every link goes to the bank's own site, and every date is the bank's own.
BY THE WIRE DESK · BANKING JUDGMENT LAB · UPDATED
// THE SHORT ANSWER
Few banks print their dates, so start with the careers page and look early. Of the 34 large banks listed here across the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Germany and France, eight print when applications open, and most of those windows open between June and September. A window is often short: one Australian bank's ran for three weeks. Look first for a commercial or business banking stream, which many banks name separately from their general graduate scheme, and treat the bank's own page as the authority, because dates change without notice.
// SEE WHERE YOU READ FROM
Twenty-four one-minute files, three from each chapter of How Bankers Think, each call read against a senior banker's — ending in a card of where your judgment sits. Twenty minutes, no signup, nothing stored.
// THE APPLICATION CALENDAR
Of the 34 banks below, 8 print when applications open. They are here by the month each window opens, in the bank's words. A date with no year is the pattern the bank describes; it can move, so check the page before you plan around it.

|---|---|---|---|
| MARCH | Commonwealth BankAustralia | Graduate Program | “Applications open – March and August” |

// WHERE TO APPLY, BY COUNTRY
The bank's name goes to its careers page. “Not printed” means the page we opened gives no dates, not that the programme has none: most banks publish them only when applications open, so register where a bank lets you and look again each month.

// WHAT TO DO WITH THE LIST
Start with the stream, not the bank. A graduate who wants to lend to businesses should look for the commercial or business banking column, because a general scheme may rotate you somewhere else. What a Commercial Banker Does and What Jobs Banks Hire For set out the seats.
Then prepare before the window opens, since most of them are short. Commercial Banking Interview Questions covers what the panel asks, and the assessment centre case study the exercise most of these programmes use.
// HOW THIS LIST IS KEPT
The banks are the large ones an applicant in each country looks at first, chosen by size. Listing a bank is not a recommendation, and no bank has paid or been asked to appear. Every link and date was opened on the bank's own site on 1 November 2026. Pages change without notice, and the bank's page is always the authority.
Pages for UniCredit in Germany (HypoVereinsbank), BNP Paribas and Groupe BPCE would not open that day, so they are not listed. Other banks in these countries hire graduates too; this is where to start, not everywhere to look.
