What happens to the money while your service is down? The last round for an engineering seat on the payments platform. The first hour was the engineering, and it went well. The final interviewer is from the payments business, and asks one question: the service you would own sends business customers' outgoing payments, and it goes down for most of an hour in the middle of a weekday. What happens to the money?

Accepted Answer

D. Some payments were half-way through. Each has to end in a state someone can prove — went, did not, unknown — and no retry may pay twice. Then: whose payroll is late.

A. Nothing is lost. The service fails over, the requests are retried with backoff, and the queue drains itself once the system is back. Customers see a delay on their statement and nothing worse than that.

B. It depends on the architecture. I'd want to understand the message broker, the database's durability settings and the retry policy before I could answer that properly.

C. That is a question for operations and the business. Engineering's job is to keep the service up, restore it fast, and hand them a clean timeline afterwards.

Question 2

How would you handle a judgemental provision you disagree with? Half-year close. The expected-credit-loss model produces a provision for a large business borrower, and the credit team has added a judgemental overlay that takes most of it away: the borrower has banked here for decades and, they say, always comes through. You have read the file. Its last two covenant tests were waived, and its debtor days have lengthened every quarter.

Accepted Answer

B. Take it back to the evidence. “Always comes through” is a history, not a reason a reviewer can follow. I'd put the waived tests beside it and agree what the provision stands on.

A. Accept the overlay. Provisioning judgment belongs to credit, they know the borrower far better than finance does, and the file has decades of repayment behind it.

C. Reject the overlay and book the full model provision. When the judgment is contested and the evidence points the wrong way, the prudent number is the higher one.

D. Use the model's number with no overlay at all. The model is applied consistently across the whole book; overlays are where bias and relationship pressure get in.

Question 3

The item does not fit the procedure. Now what? You work in loan servicing. A business customer's monthly loan repayment has failed three months running. Each time it was presented again by hand a few days later and went through, so each month the case was closed as paid. The procedure covers a failed payment. It does not cover one that keeps failing and then succeeding. It is the fourth month, and the payment has just failed again.

Accepted Answer

A. Treat the pattern as the item. Process this payment, then tell whoever looks after the lending what operations can see: a business that cannot pay on the day, four months running.

B. Present it again by hand. It has gone through every time, the account is not in arrears, and under the procedure as written it is paid.

C. Raise a ticket asking the procedure owner to add a rule for repeated failures, and keep following the existing procedure until that rule exists.

D. Contact the customer and move the payment to a later date in the month that matches their cash flow, so the failures stop and nobody in servicing has to chase it every month.

Question 4

Our critical supplier is in trouble. What do you do? A supplier runs a service the bank could not operate without for more than a few days. Its latest accounts were filed late, two of its senior people have left, and its largest other customer has just moved to a competitor. The contract has years to run, with strong service levels and penalties.

Accepted Answer

C. Read them the way a lender reads a borrower in trouble — the cash, the late accounts, the lost customer — and find out what we would do in the week they stopped.

A. Rely on the contract. The service levels and penalties exist for exactly this, and the supplier has every commercial reason to keep performing while it sorts itself out.

B. Start replacing them now: run a tender, pick an alternative and plan the migration before things get worse and we are doing it in a hurry.

D. Ask the supplier for a formal update on its financial position and a letter of assurance, and review the relationship properly when it arrives.

Question 5

How would you design an incentive that does not create a conduct problem? A business lending team wants a new incentive plan. The head of the team says the current one is too complicated and nobody knows what they are paid for. They want something simple: pay the bankers for the new lending they write.

Accepted Answer

B. Start from the behaviour it buys. Paying for lending written buys lending, including the bad. Pay instead for what it is still doing later, and ask the team how they'd game it.

A. Keep it simple, as asked, and add a clawback on any loan that defaults, so bad lending eventually costs the banker who wrote it.

C. Use a balanced scorecard: a share for volume, a share for customer satisfaction, a share for risk and compliance measures, with the weights set by the business and reviewed each year, so no one measure dominates.

D. Take individual incentives out of lending altogether and pay a fixed salary, so that nothing in the pay design distorts a credit judgment.
