The Set of Three

COASTLINE, FROM THE AUDIT PARTNER'S CHAIR

LISTED RETAIL · THE AUDIT PARTNER'S CHAIR · DIFFICULTY 4/5

// THE SETUP

You are the engagement partner on Coastline Retail Group. Three weeks ago you signed the FY25 opinion, unqualified, as you have for six years. Every one of the three judgements that mattered is on the file with its evidence. The US$3.2m inventory provision was released after a full stocktake your team attended. The change to recognising supplier rebates on order placement was reviewed against the standard and disclosed. The US$4.1m of store refits capitalised this year met the criteria for an asset, whatever earlier years had done with repairs. Materiality was set on the group's profit. Each judgement was tested on its own, and each passed.

On Thursday the chair of the audit committee rings. The CFO has forwarded her a note from one of the company's four club banks, which has declined consent to the dividend increase and circulated its reasons to the whole club: the three notes set side by side, operating cash flow down 31%, cash conversion of 83% against 131% last year, and the observation that without the release and the rebate timing the year's profit is down roughly a third, not up 9%. "The bank says the plus nine was assembled," she says. "Did we miss something?"

The accounts are signed and released. The AGM notice, with the 75% payout proposal in it, is at the printer. Planning for the FY26 audit starts in six weeks.

She is waiting on the line. What do you tell the audit committee?

Each of the three judgements was within the standard, with evidence on the file. Together they are the difference between profit up 9% and profit down a third. That is the sum the bank did, and the one the audit did not.
