TORRENT BAY BOTTLING, FROM THE PRICE-SETTER'S CHAIR

INSIDE THE BANK · THE PRICE-SETTER'S CHAIR · DIFFICULTY 3/5

// THE SETUP

Pricing below the rate card needs your signature. The request on your desk this morning is from a relationship manager whose client of nine years, Torrent Bay Bottling, has forwarded a competitor's term sheet: forty basis points inside the bank's pricing, and a deadline of Friday. The client's email said they would rather stay.

The term sheet is real and signed. The competitor has been winning share in the sector all year, and its pricing is not a bluff. Your rate card was set eighteen months ago, in a different market. Torrent Bay has never missed a payment, and the relationship carries its deposits and transaction banking as well as the loan.

The competitor's sheet also carries a looser structure — no borrowing base and a higher advance against stock. That is not your call: whether the bank matches a structure is for credit to decide, and credit is deciding it separately. What is on your desk is the price.

Forty points, by Friday. What do you sign?

A pricing floor is usually set so that a loan still covers what it costs the bank to hold — the funding, the loss the bank expects on loans like it, a return on the capital held against it, and the cost of running it. Below that, a bank is paying to keep the customer.
