// THE SHORT ANSWER

Debt per kilogram of milk solids is the dairy lender's leverage measure: total farm debt divided by the farm's annual milk solids production. It expresses debt in the unit the farm earns in, so it can be read directly against the milk payout per kilogram and against the farm's breakeven — the payout at which cash covers costs, interest, loan repayments and drawings. Because production is steadier than land value, it is a steadier leverage measure for a farm than debt against land.
