Log prices are down 18% and the sawmill wants to double its inventory line to buy the dip. The spread is real. So is the temptation.

THE SECOND MEETING

You have ten minutes. What do you do?
Read the fileISSUE 01 · APRIL 2026 — Pacific Premium asked for a US$1.5m working-capital increase on a cycle that had quietly doubled. The senior read was C: decline as framed, surface the structure. The MD took the harder path — the US$3.5m drawn balance restructured into a three-year amortising term loan, with a right-sized US$1.2m working line on top. Read Issue 01 →
// THE SETUP
Twelve months since the restructure, and the MD is back in the room — this time with the numbers doing the talking. Four quarterly term-loan payments, all on time. A credit controller hired within a month of documentation. DSO down from 82 days to 64. Inventory down from US$3.8m to US$3.1m. EBITDA margin back over 10%. Revenue US$43.5m — up barely 4%, and deliberately so: two large contracts were declined mid-year because, in the MD's words, "we're fixing the plumbing first."
The request lands at annual review: restore the working line from US$1.2m to the old US$3.5m. "The discipline is proven. We'd like the headroom back." The second-generation commercial director — four years into the role now, and visibly the author of half the reporting pack — sits beside him, nodding.
Two quiet things sit in the file. Nine of the eighteen days of DSO improvement trace to a 2% prompt-payment discount granted to the largest supermarket group — about thirty percent of revenue — with the cost running through the margin line. And FY26 capex was US$0.4m against US$1.1m of depreciation: the machines aged while the balance sheet healed. The relationship manager calls the year "a model rehabilitation" and supports the restoration in full.

Reference points: Issue 01 closed at DSO 82 days, OCF −US$0.6m, margin 9%. Sustained manufacturing recoveries typically show capex at or above 0.8× depreciation by the second year. Note which delta is red.
