// THE SHORT ANSWER
Debt sculpting sets each period's repayment so that forecast cash flow available for debt service covers that period's debt service by the same target ratio, instead of repaying in equal instalments. With a target of 1.25 times, a period forecast to generate US$5m of that cash carries US$4m of debt service, and a period forecast at US$2.5m carries US$2m; the loan's size is the present value of those payments. Repayments rise and fall with the forecast, which suits projects with uneven cash flow, but no period carries spare cover, so a shortfall in any one of them goes straight to the ratio.

The market is mid-market commercial lending as practised in New Zealand and Australia; where a convention differs elsewhere, the page says so.
