Audit and Assurance, Read by a Lender

Eight topics every assurance syllabus teaches, and what the bank on the other side of the confirmation does with each.

// THE SHORT ANSWER

Audit and assurance teaches how far a set of accounts can be trusted; a lender starts from that answer and reads on for the year ahead. The level of assurance sets how much the bank checks itself; the going-concern basis usually rests on a date the bank controls; a qualification is read before the numbers; a changed auditor is information behaviour; the confirmation is answered from the bank's own records; and three judgements each inside the standard can move a result by a third when read as a set. This page takes eight assurance topics and says what the bank on the other side of the confirmation does with each.

BASIS  Practitioner judgment from sixteen years in commercial banking, set out in How Bankers Think (Highbank Press, 2026). Every borrower on this site is a composite constructed for teaching, not a client. The market is mid-market commercial lending as practised in New Zealand and Australia; where a convention differs elsewhere, the page says so.

// 01 — LEVELS OF ASSURANCE

Compiled accounts carry none, reviewed accounts limited assurance, audited accounts reasonable assurance. The desk reads the level as a setting on its own work: whatever the level below an audit leaves unchecked, the bank checks for itself — bank statements against the cash, the debtors ledger against the receivables, the stock against the security.

// 02 — GOING CONCERN AND BANK SUPPORT

For a borrower, the going-concern basis usually rests on a date the bank controls. The auditor asks the bank; the bank can say what is true and cannot promise a decision not yet taken. A material uncertainty paragraph that names the bank's renewal is a question addressed to the bank, and the review is its answer.

// 03 — THE QUALIFIED OPINION

A qualification is read before the numbers. Whether the auditor could not see enough or did not agree, the bank asks what the accounts would say if the auditor had prevailed, and why the business accepted the report rather than curing the cause — a question about management as much as about the accounts.

// 04 — A CHANGE OF AUDITOR

Information behaviour moves before the numbers do, and a changed auditor is information behaviour. Downward, mid-engagement, alongside a request to move a covenant test date, it is the file that reaches intensive care in Issue 09 ahead of the file with the worse ratios.

// 05 — THE BANK CONFIRMATION

The confirmation is answered from the bank's records, not the client's, and it covers everything the bank holds: balances, facilities drawn and undrawn, security, guarantees given on the client's behalf that the client's books may not show. A bank that answers only the question asked has confirmed the balance sheet the client wrote.

// 06 — EVENTS AFTER THE BALANCE DATE

Between the balance date and the signing, the bank is often the first to know the fact that matters most: a facility not renewed, a line withdrawn, a demand made. A lost facility is a fact about going concern wherever it falls in the calendar, and accounts signed without it were signed on an incomplete picture.

// 07 — MANAGEMENT BIAS, READ ACROSS JUDGEMENTS

Three accounting judgements, each within the standard and each tested on its own, can together move a result from down a third to up nine per cent. The syllabus names it an indicator of management bias; the lender simply adds the three up. The partner who signed Coastline's accounts meets that sum on the phone.

// 08 — SCEPTICISM, THE LENDER'S VERSION

Professional scepticism in the syllabus is an attitude; on a lending desk it is a procedure with a name. Profit is a narrative built from policies, cash is what happened, and the two are read against each other before either is believed. The glossary defines it; the chapter tray drills it.

  1. International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, ISRE 2400 (Revised), Engagements to Review Historical Financial Statements — release of 27 September 2012 — A review is a limited assurance engagement whose procedures are substantially less than an audit's, and it expresses no audit opinion — the middle level in section 01.
  2. International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, ISRS 4410 (Revised), Compilation Engagements (effective for reports dated on or after 1 July 2013) — paragraphs 1 and 6 — A compilation obtains no assurance, and the practitioner is not required to verify the accuracy or completeness of what management provides — why the bank checks for itself below an audit, section 01.
  3. International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, ISA 570 (Revised 2024), Going Concern — release of April 2025 (effective for periods beginning on or after 15 December 2026) — The auditor evaluates management's going-concern assessment over at least twelve months from approval, considering the potential for management bias, and communicates more with external parties — sections 02 and 07.

// QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Does a bank rely on the audit opinion?
It starts from it. An unqualified opinion is the bank's first assurance that the numbers it is about to restate and ratio were prepared fairly, and the level of assurance — audit, review, compilation — decides how much checking the desk does itself. But the bank reads for a different question, the year ahead rather than the year behind, and it reads the judgements as a set rather than one at a time. The opinion is where the bank's reading begins, not where it ends.
What does a lender do with a qualified opinion?
Reads the qualification before the accounts. A scope limitation says something the auditor could not verify; a disagreement says the auditor and the management did not agree on a number the bank is about to lend against. Either way the bank's first question is what the accounts would look like if the auditor had had their way, and its second is why the business accepted a qualified report rather than fixing the cause.
Why does a bank care which firm audits its borrower?
Less for the name than for the change. A borrower that moves from a larger firm to a smaller one, mid-engagement, in a year it needed a clean opinion, has done something the bank reads as a signal — one of the two names that reach intensive care in Issue 09. A stable auditor is background; a changed one is a question, and the bank asks it before the next set of accounts arrives.
